All Starfield Companions and Abilities
Companions in Starfield may prove to be significantly more valuable than those in earlier Bethesda games, assisting not only in combat but possibly in dialogue as well. At present, only one official companion for Starfield has been revealed, a robot named Vasco. However, we can expect more companions to emerge once Starfield is ultimately released. For now, let’s examine the debut Starfield companion, along with their abilities and functions.
All Starfield companions so far
As of this writing, the sole officially announced Starfield companion is Vasco, a robot affiliated with Constellation, one of the prominent Starfield factions.
Initially introduced in gameplay trailers, Vasco was later elaborated upon in an official video that describes Starfield’s inaugural companion as follows:
“Constructed as an early model by Lunar Robotics, Vasco underwent refurbishment to fulfill Constellation’s mission requirements. He is a utilitarian, heavy-industrial machine designed to withstand the harsh conditions of space travel. Vasco’s blueprint is based on a standard Type-A bipedal chassis, enabling navigation through rough terrain and equipped with essential survival gear and ample payload capacity for prolonged overland expeditions. Although Vasco possesses defensive capabilities, his primary function is peaceful.
“Adorned with Constellation’s white-and-red livery, Vasco’s paint has worn and panels have dented over years of field experience. Nevertheless, he remains a dependable companion for a daring explorer like yourself.”
In the official gameplay reveal, we catch a glimpse of Vasco—or a similar-looking robot—exiting the player’s ship and providing quest information, such as locations and remarks on upcoming enemies. At the moment, Vasco is portrayed as a kind of pack mule—a sizeable walking companion capable of carrying essential equipment and extra loot while possessing limited self-defense abilities.
Moreover, there are hints of a possible secondary companion, the Adoring Fan, which is a nod to Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion. In that game, an infatuated character would repeatedly appear to either annoy you or offer gifts. In Starfield, players can choose a trait called “Hero Worshipped,” which grants the following perk:
“You’ve earned the attention of an annoying ‘Adoring Fan’ who will show up randomly and chatter nonstop. On the bright side, he’ll give you gifts…”
These spontaneous appearances also evoke a Fallout ‘Mysterious Stranger’ vibe. This leads us to speculate whether the Adoring Fan will eventually become a full-time companion—or if players would even want that. Nevertheless, they will serve as a somewhat helpful NPC, making them worth mentioning.
How Starfield companions work
Starfield companions are set to offer a range of dynamic and practical features beyond merely fighting by your side. One key aspect is their ability to comment on players’ decisions, even those that don’t directly impact them, as demonstrated in this video.
Vasco’s portrayal implies that companions can carry gear and, of course, assist in combat, much like in previous Bethesda games. Additionally, there have been discussions about assigning crew members to starships as part of Starfield’s ship customization and to bases built on planets.
The possibility of Starfield companions being involved in romances and relationships is still uncertain, with Vasco being an improbable source for any revelations in that area. However, in this interview (54.02), Todd Howard employs the term “companion” when discussing potential romances in Starfield. It is unclear whether he uses the phrase in a broader sense or specifically refers to Starfield Companions, but it seems highly likely that workplace romances could develop between the player and recruitable NPCs.
