Starfield: Romances and Relationship Details
As you venture into the cosmos in Starfield, you’ll have the opportunity to form romances and relationships with specific companions and crew members. Familiar to Bethesda games, Starfield introduces innovative ideas and a more detailed and nuanced romance system with its NPCs.
Central to this enhanced experience is the increased responsiveness of your companions to your in-game actions and dialogue choices. As a result, your decisions can provoke disagreements with characters, leading them to dislike you temporarily after making choices they disapprove of.
The in-game consequences of these conflicts remain uncertain—perhaps lowering combat efficiency? However, Starfield appears to offer a more multifaceted approach to romance, going beyond simply winning characters over and choosing them as partners. With potentially more depth than anticipated, the relationships and romance in Starfield promise to engage players in new ways.
Starfield romances and relationships explained
Starfield has four ‘major’ companions who belong to the Constellation Starfield faction. These companions are romanceable and come with their own unique missions. These romance and relationship details have been confirmed by Todd Howard or Bethesda:
- Numerous romanceable NPCs will be part of the Starfield single-player campaign.
- Relationships are described as “more complex, in terms of whether they like you or they don’t like you”.
- It’s feasible to momentarily upset romantic partners, rather than making only permanent changes or ending the relationship.
- Companions each have their own distinct quest lines.
While the main options for romance are Starfield companions, there seems to be some overlapping between major cast members and the Starfield crew members you can recruit around the galaxy. For instance, crew members can become ‘companions’, yet only the ‘main four’ can build relationships.
Bethesda appears to focus more on adding complexity to relationships, rather than the number of characters you can romance. In a Todd Howard interview, it was mentioned that some relationships will be “more complex” than in other Bethesda games, suggesting a focus on emotional nuances rather than basic like/dislike feelings. This aligns with the new Starfield dialogue system, where the characters’ reactions to what you say, and who you accompany, could potentially affect your choices.
Howard elaborates, “We have several companions, and for them, we aim towards… not incredibly complex romance, but more complex than we’ve done previously, where it’s not merely they like or dislike you – they could be in love with you and still disagree with something you did, be upset with you temporarily, and then revert back to loving you.”
So far, the only romance witnessed in action was with Sam, an ex-Freestar Collective member. He has expressed romantic feelings for the player, stating, “never loved anyone ‘cept you.”
Moreover, Starfield relationships will feature sexual elements, as indicated by ESRB ratings mentioning “suggestive dialogue after sharing a bed with characters”. However, nudity is notably absent from the descriptions, indicating probable discretion. No official word yet on whether you’ll receive a buff for sleeping with your partner, a feature familiar in Bethesda games.
