The initial ambiguity surrounding Starfield likely stemmed from the game’s initial reveals, which referred to the ‘single-player campaign’ as though it were distinct from something else. Given the context of Fallout 76’s transition to multiplayer and Redfall’s co-op gameplay, the absence of a definitive ‘single-player only’ statement fueled rumors and speculation. However, Bethesda has confirmed that Starfield is indeed a single-player game, putting all uncertainties to rest once and for all.

It’s possible that an internet connection may be needed to play, but that doesn’t imply the presence of online features. Redfall, a game that supports both single-player and 4-player co-op, initially required an online connection for single-player mode, but this requirement is being removed following fan backlash. If Starfield were to have a similar feature, the response to Redfall could potentially lead to a change before anyone becomes aware.

The game emphasizes worldbuilding and role-playing across an expansive galaxy filled with numerous star systems to explore. Accommodating multiplayer would involve managing players potentially light-years apart, and with extensive character building and crafting, it would be tedious to wait for a friend engrossed in the ship customization menus.
Online stat sharing among friends might be feasible, and ambitious Starfield multiplayer mod attempts are anticipated. However, by design and for the foreseeable future, Starfield is intended to be a single-player experience.
