Starfield: Stolen Ships and Boarding
Bethesda’s Todd Howard unveiled that Starfield will feature a unique spin on space combat, drawing inspirations from the likes of FTL and MechWarrior. Excitingly, players will even be allowed to capture ships they board.
During an interview with IGN after the Xbox and Bethesda Game Showcase, Starfield’s director, Howard, explained that although they’ve been ardent fans of numerous space simulation and shooter games from the ’90s, they wanted Starfield to present a distinctive experience.
One of the game-specific features takes a cue from FTL, the 2012 spaceship simulation game known for its tactical energy management. Players can manage the allocation of power among different subsystems of their ship. Howard shared, “Your ship has various power systems. [There’s a] little bit of FTL there in terms of putting how much power into three different weapon systems, then your engines, and shields, and the grav drive that enables you to jump and maneuver out of tricky situations.”
When it comes to Starfield’s dogfighting, Bethesda has opted for a slower pace, with Howard citing MechWarrior as an inspiration. Beyond just combat, Starfield offers a range of other intriguing gameplay elements. Howard hinted at additional features that will add complexity to the game, with activities such as boarding and hijacking other ships.
The game extends beyond dogfighting, allowing players to dock with other ships, disable them, have space dialogues, visit star stations, and participate in smuggling. Players can expect a whole host of activities, making for a compelling sci-fi game. Special quests will even involve these aforementioned features. In terms of gameplay, Howard assured fans it’s a fun aspect of the game they’re eager to showcase.
What is more enthralling is that during the Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase, Howard revealed that the game will offer more than a thousand planets for players to explore, suggesting a plethora of customization options.
Over time, fans speculate whether our Solar System will play a key role in the game’s plot. Bethesda unveiled some storytelling details in a new trailer, fueling continued speculation until Starfield finally hits the shelves in 2023.
